The excessive use of smartphones and electronic gadgets in Mongolia has left many children addicted, which affects their behavior and lifestyle, increasing the children’s need for medical care and causing a decline in family and social interaction.

B.Bayarmaa, the Deputy Director of the National Center for Mental Health stated that the center has seen a significant rise in the number of visitors this year, with around 90-100 children visiting the National Center for Mental Health, up from 3 to 4 children in 2000.

According to B.Bayarmaa, the key reason for children’s attraction to surfing the Internet and applications and hence addiction to technology was the shift to online education and the children’s necessity to use phones.

Last April, the importation of Chemical fertilizers and pesticides was banned in Sri Lanka. It has been six months since the prohibition was implemented, and today there is a food shortage created in the country. It has been reported that there is a significant reduction in supplying fruits and vegetables for the wholesale market existing in the country, in addition, the vegetables available in the market are not in good condition due to a lack of fertilizers.

Colombo Manning Market, the leading marketplace existing in the country receiving stocks of vegetables, has also been significantly reduced, and the prices of the vegetables have doubled and tripled. According to the traders, the reason for this is the reduction of farmers’ crops due to the ban on fertilizer. As the Manning market is the center of food distribution in the country, this affects the entire country in the same way.

In this problematic situation, the government has loosened the Policy, given the private sector’s Permission to import fertilizer, and has decided not to provide the previous state subsidy. Accordingly, Famers will have to buy fertilizers for a high cost in the future. However, it will take at least another three months to harvest new crops using chemical fertilizers. The people will have to face the existing food shortage.

Buriganga River was once called the life of Dhaka, where people used to gather on the river banks during the afternoons and evenings of everyday, aquatic life was prospering and Hilsa fish was the river gift to the people of the city, but now it’s all just history. These days the river is called the dying river, since an excessive pollution is hitting the river and is threatening biodiversity and public health.

According to several studies on the Buriganga River, many causes for the river’s pollution were identified, such as sedimentation at the upstream, encroachment, and disposal of solid wastes, sewage and industrial wastes in the river.

The history, livelihood, culture and heritage of Dhaka City have been largely shaped by this small but important river.

During the British Period, Buriganga River bank was considered to be the most scenic place in Dhaka for its natural beauty, and the river was once used as the main source of water supply for Dhaka’s residents. More than four hundred years later, the river still continues to play a very important role, since according to officials, an average of 30,000 people are using Sadarghat launch terminal – one of the largest river ports in the world – for departure and arrival every day.

Hundreds of homeless beach vendors in Prey Veng, Sihanoukville, who left their hometowns and moved to Sihanoukville for a better work chance, demand the local government to allow them to stay where they are in Otres Beach and not to force them moving away.

Some of beach vendors claim that they had to leave their hometowns due to the lack of work opportunities and the debts they bear for banks and microfinance companies. While others say that their business had been affected after COVID pandemic and the lockdown during the past two years.

Recently, the Cambodian government announced the reopening of the country again. Beach vendors have welcomed the decision; however, the local government has now asked them to leave or build proper shops if they want to continue selling their products.

November 18th of this month, Taipei officially opened its representative office in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, which bearing the name “Taiwan” for the first time, after Taipei used to call such missions the “Taipei Representative Office”.

For its part, China escalated the tone of threats and intimidation towards Lithuania after this step, considering it a major diplomatic infringement and a flagrant violation of the “One China” principle.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian stressed that Vilnius’ attempts to abandon the statement on establishing diplomatic relations with Beijing would undermine China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and blatantly interfere in its internal affairs. As for Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, he said that his country would appreciate the support of the European Union in its dispute with China, after the United States agreed to provide it with financial support in the form of an export credit deal worth $600 million to help mitigate any financial losses resulting from the dispute. He noted that strengthening cooperation with Taiwan will cover many areas such as semiconductors, laser technologies and financial technologies.

Every year on December 10, the Mongolian Human Rights Forum celebrates International Human Rights Day.

This year’s day is expected to be distributed to around 50 events by WFP member groups. This month’s events make this year’s day more special, according to what the head of the forum indicated, as part of their work this month, they are launching an online campaign called “Demand Your Rights” and spreading it to the public via social media.

WFP member groups will also have weekly conversations on certain subjects. The discussions will center on government openness and accountability, the right of people with disabilities to travel, women’s rights, and the implementation of the UN Human Rights Council’s Third Report on the Human Rights Situation in Mongolia, which includes 170 recommendations.

Mongolia became the first nation in Asia to establish independent legislation on the protection of human rights defenders with the passage of the Law on the Legal Status of Human Rights Defenders by the State Great Hural in April 2021. It will be appropriate to examine who is a human rights defender under this legislation, the role of public authorities in encouraging the activities of human rights defenders, and what protective mechanisms are in place if a human rights defender is endangered by human rights activities at this meeting.

This law must be implemented without fear to enhance human rights.

Environmentalists have mentioned that six countries located in the SAARC region have been affected by forming a dead sea in the Bay of Bengal around Sri Lanka, as a result, they have identified that the countries like Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia are at risk.

The dead sea, which has currently formed in the Bay of Bengal, extends from 100 meters to 400 meters depth of the sea and covers an area of about 60000 square kilometers. Environmentalists have mentioned that this situation has arisen because the regional countries have been dumping waste that includes plastic into the sea through the rivers for years without proper management.

This situation occurs due to the reduction of the oxygen level on a large scale due to the activation of plastics, polythene, nitrates, phosphates, and dung released to the ocean by the regional countries. Therefore, marine life has become very low in this sea area, which has made a severe impact on the growth of fish resources as well as the fishing and tourism industries. As this destruction can be minimized through the concerted decisions taken by all the countries in the region, shortly, a round of consolidated discussions called “Ayora” will be launched among the countries.

Regional governments must take immediate actions, as the addition of plastic to the food chain harms human health.
