About Some Guy Called Earl

Born in England, Earl was constantly surrounded by dance music as his father was a Soul DJ so from a tender age he was exposed to the sounds of Motown and Soul, Earl to this day states this exposure is what gave him his love and passion for dance music.

Earl’s first foray into the world of music and DJing began in 1990 when he found a love for Italian House and the Rave scene that was going strong in the UK at that time, and at the tender age of 17 started DJing in his home city of Wakefield. Living in the North of England Earl had a great choice of clubbing options, but it was only when he started going to the legendary Back to Basics in Leeds did he find his true calling, deep house and tech house.

Earl said, “I remember going to the top floor and hearing these awesome deep sounds and melodies, and thought how more emotive the music was compared to what I was currently playing, from that night on I was hooked.”

The DJ who was playing at that time was Deep House aficionado and longtime Back to Basic resident Ralph Lawson (20:20 Vision Records). Earl spent what he calls “his formative years” at Back to Basics learning from Ralph and other notable guest DJ’s such as Jamie Anderson, Derrick Carter, Peace Division and Kevin Yost, and often cites the 90s as the “best time for house music”.

He soon took up several residences in the North of England most notably the Hedonism events at the Think Tank & Café Mex. Earl has always stated he was never interested in being famous, just wanted to play his music which is a nice ethos to have especially in today’s world of Instagram DJs!
Earls style evolved as the Tech House beats emerged from the West Coast of America on labels like Tango, Siesta and Doubledown, his sets became more drums orientated as he would often start deep then build to a pure Tech House finale. This style has stayed with him throughout the years and can be heard on his recently released Rebirth Sessions.

In 2004, just as the CDJs were becoming the go-to choice for DJs Earl relocated to Thailand, leaving his beloved vinyl in the UK, and for the time he hung up the headphones. Although averse to the onset of digital mixing, he was still passionate about the music and began buying MP3s and building his digital collection. It was when he visited GLOW club in Bangkok and experienced the Funktion One sound system that his passion for DJing was reignited.

After taking advice from several industry friends, he eventually jumped back on the horse and purchased a Pioneer controller, and the rest is now history. The House Music veteran with his roots from the highly influential early 90’s rave scene in Leeds, UK has a lot to look forward to with upcoming DJ collaborations with long term friend Jamie Anderson (Artform Records) and Greek Deep House producer Ilias Katelanos (i-records).
His sets take you on a journey from Deep House to Tech House, and he has been known to drop some killer Techno later on in a set, a fan of the smaller more intimate venues, Earl likes to feed off the energy of the crowd to create a night they will remember.
