Pirates and cross dressing on the Twelfth Night at Creative Industries M Theatre – May 23, 24, 25, 29, 30, 31 and June 1
Twelfth Night is a classic Shakespearian comedy that dared to question gender norms long before it was fashionable. Opening on a dramatic shipwreck on the island of Illyria, Shakespeare’s most beloved heroine finds herself haplessly & hysterically trapped through all of love’s amusing comedies as she struggles to seek out her true soul mate.
Viola (Hannah Davis) finds herself shipwrecked on the shores of Illyria. Duke Orsino (Daniel Smith) is madly in love with Olivia (Brittney Stewart) but finds himself unwanted. Yet, when Viola, in disguise as a boy, does the duke’s bidding and tries to woo Olivia to him, the scheme backfires when Viola realizes that she wants the duke all for herself and the fair Olivia takes a sudden fancy to the messenger…
This Bangkok Community Theatre production is set in the golden age of piracy in a wind-blown and dilapidated island town complete with pirates, soldiers, and sailors. This show has music, drunks, idiots, separated twins, and even a fool. Shakespeare’s timeless comedy has a variety of themes within its content. Desire vs. love, melancholy, madness, deception, and gender/sexual identity are all touched upon.
