Polish Arts and Culture Week at Chulalongkorn University – 23rd to 29th April 2017

The first ever POLISH ARTS & CULTURE WEEK in Bangkok, will take place between 23rd and 29th of APRIL, with a dazzling array of events, that offers a remarkable introduction to the diverse historical, political and cultural traditions of this vibrant East European country. The events include dance, music, cinema, cuisine, photography and panel discussions.

The Polish Week is organized by the Embassy of Poland, together with the Central and Eastern European Studies section of the Centre for European Studies, as well as the Dept. of English, Faculty of Arts, of the Chulalongkorn University.
Most of the events will be held at the Chulalongkorn University, while the film screenings will be held at the BACC and TK Park.

Below you will find the detailed program of the events within this rich and varied Polish Arts and Culture Week.
The famed Polish JEDLINIOK dance group will give a scintillating music and dance performance as well as will hold a dance workshop, on SUNDAY 23rd of APRIL. The dances will include the well-known Polnez and Mazurek national dances, as well as the Zywiec and Keskid regional Highlander dances.

The official OPENING RECEPTION will be on MONDAY 24th of APRIL, where the Jedliniok dance troupe will perform again.
There will be a unique Polish culinary workshop-presentation by a Polish cuisine expert on POLISH FOOD entitled ‘Polish Culinary Paths’ on TUESDAY 25th of APRIL. Another one on Polish Easter Traditions and EASTER EGG DECORATIONS, on THURSDAY 27th of APRIL.

Another noteworthy workshop is the one on MOBILE PHOTOGRAPHY, conducted by Polish Mobile Photography Collective: Grupa Mobilni on WEDNESDAY 26th of APRIL.

There are two important panel discussions, which introduce two of Poland’s most important and globally acclaimed political icons.

The first is on TADEUSZ KOSCIUSZKO, a 17th century Polish figure, who became a world symbol of struggle for freedom, independence, unity, as he fought hard for freedom of two countries Poland and America. In Poland he fought for the formation of a Republic and then he took a part American Revolution. His participation was highly appreciated by Thomas Jefferson who raved over him- ‘As pure a son of liberty as I have ever known!’

A documentary ‘Kosciuszko -A Man Ahead of his Time’ will be screened on TUESDAY 25th of APRIL, followed by a speech on him by a noted History Professor from Poland. Kosciuszko’s importance in America, will be emphasized by a senior official from the US Embassy. There will be a presentation of the global commemorative sites of Kosciuszko’s legacy too, particularly useful for the audience in Thailand, that has not had an occasion to know him.

The second panel discussion is on the great Polish political leader JOZEF PILSUDSKI, who was the first Marshal of the country in 1920, a two-time Prime Minster, and is today, globally recognized as an outstanding activist, politician, strategist and visionary. A talk entitled ‘The Field Marshal of Poland-An Extraordinary figure in Extraordinary Times’ by a noted History Professor from Poland will be held, on WEDNESDAY 26th of APRIL, together with a multimedia presentation of his remembrance sites. There will also be a Photo Exhibition of this outstanding Polish leader.

After introducing us to two of these amazing political figures, the Polish Week will celebrate one of their best-known writer JOSEPH CONRAD, as this is 160th anniversary of his birth. Conrad was a mariner and a traveler who lived in many countries, becoming Poland’s best known global author. He also spent 2 weeks in Bangkok, at the Oriental Hotel, which has a permanent section named after him.

His memory will be celebrated, through a PHOTO COMPETITION, entitled ‘What would Conrad say?’, referring to images of Bangkok.

The writer will also be resurrected through the screening of three great movies based on his books –
LORD JIM (1965), directed by Richard Brooke, APOLOCALYPSE NOW (1979), directed by Francis Ford Coppola, THE SECRET SHARER (2014), directed by Peter Fudakowski.

Lord Jim, starring Peter O’Toole, Apocalypse Now, starring Marlon Brando/ Charlie Sheen, which won two Academy Awards, The Secret Sharer, starring Jack Laskey /Chinese actress Zhu Zhu, which was shot in Thailand, are must-see movies that have created waves around the world. They will be screened at the BACC.

The three films will be followed by discussions, by noted academics from the Literature Dept. of Chulalongkorn University and a presentation by a history-lover, of Conrad’s stay in Bangkok.

The last film screening of the Polish Week, is FOREIGN BODY, directed by the globally renowned contemporary Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Zanussi. It is the Closing event, and will be screened at the TK PARK, on SATURDAY 29th of APRIL.
The screening will be followed by the Closing Reception, bringing to an end the spectacular Polish Arts and Culture Week in the city.
